Heartsleeve is a dynamic and varied musical experience that draws on folk, bluegrass, reggae, and a multitude of other genres. Sometimes soft, sometimes loud, but always groovy and in the pocket, they offer a wide range of sounds and feelings. Emotional and insightful, reflective and raw, what is delivered is an honest folk music experience that keeps you tapping your toes and bobbing your head.

The band formed in 2019 when a banjo slingin' songbird (Gareth McNichol-Briggs) met a bass wielding wizard (Matt Chaput) in the campground of Winnipeg Folk Fest. The first time they jammed, it was clear that there was an immediate musical connection and understanding; true friendship was discovered and a musical brotherhood began.
Matt invited Gareth to jam with his former bandmates, Greg Fehr (guitar) and Mike Erb (mandolin/pedal steel), and neighbor/drummer Riley St Hilaire.
The initial musical chemistry between Matt and Gareth, coupled with the history and camaraderie of the other blossomed into what became Heartsleeve. A musical vehicle where every member could share their songwriting talents, melodies, harmonies, feelings, and enjoy playing amongst good company after a long days work.
Playing venues around Winnipeg including The Park Theatre, Times Change(d), Goodwill Social Club, Park Alleys, and a handful of backyard hootenanys, the band continued to develop their sound and expand their fanbase.

In the fall of 2019, in Matt's basement using Rileys MacBook, the boys rented equipment from Long & McQuade, and recording live-off-floor instruments. Heartsleeve was able to create their first album in the most folk-y, DIY way possible. Relying on shared knowledge from both going to recording schools, Gareth and Riley mixed the record and sent it off for mastering.
In the summer of 2020, Heartsleeve released their debut EP "Don't Lose Hope".
In 2023, after several years behind the drumkit, Riley decided to refocus on his family and children, and stepped away from the band.
Enter Ryan Woods: The man currently (and joyfully) behind the kit. Bringing an unparalleled enthusiasm balanced with taste and poise, Woodsy is the glue to the musical tapestry;
a landscape of heartbreak and hope.
A present musical experience that surfs through different genres while remaining cohesive and consistent.
Heartsleeve acknowledges the harsh realities of existence and chooses to focus on the silver lining.
